Choosing a Wine Cellar Door

Vigilant’s Classic French Doors with Arched Half Glass

Vigilant has added even more options to their wine cellar door collections, including half glass doors, to help provide a spectacular entrance to any wine cellar.

Here are some things to consider when choosing a wine cellar door for your wine cellar. A wine cellar door should, first and foremost, protect your wine cellar and its interior climate. All of our Vigilant wine cellar doors have an R-value of 13 to ensure your wine is protected properly.

The door’s jamb, or frame where the wine cellar door sits, should be fitted to the door correctly so the top and threshold line up properly. Attached to the jamb are door hinges and a lockset. Vigilant’s doors come with pre-hung jambs to aid in the installation process.

To aid in protection, a sweep with a proper height threshold should be installed to prevent air from leaking out of the wine cellar. A sweep is weather stripping that is mounted to the bottom of the door, consisting of small vinyl flaps that “sweep” the threshold and maintain a seal. Weather stripping, a synthetic rubber material discretely applied to the jambs of the doors, will also help provide a weather tight seal between the door and the jamb when the door is closed.

Beyond the wine cellar door’s function is style and decorative elements. Do you want a full glass, half glass or an all wood door? Do you want decorative elements like wrought iron or etching? Maybe you want French style doors with sidelights. The combinations are endless.

Hardware is the finishing touch on a wine cellar door and can complement pre-existing home décor or can match the style of a wine cellar. Vigilant offers a variety of handle sets in three different finishes.

Custom doors are also available in a variety of woods, finishes and accessories for a unique look.
